Control systems (EI and ECE)

Suggested Readings on Control Systems( EI and ECE )

Books to be consulted:
1. Saeed Hasan
2. D. Roychoudhury
3. BS Manke
4. AK Jairath

For both EI and ECE :

5. Modeling of systems, Difference between Closed Loop and Open loop systems, Block Diagram Reduction, and Mason’s gain formula for Signal Flow Graphs are very important

6. Solve as many numericals as possible from Routh-Hurwitz criterion( if possible pl. refer to the book by AK Jairath)

7. Drawing of Bode Plot and finding GM and PM is most important for exams.

8. Finding Transfer Function from a given Bode magnitude plot is also important(refer. AK Jairath)

9. Cover all the sub-topics on Root-locus to be able to solve any problem on Root-locus , as a question on Root-locus(similar to solved examples of BS Manke’s book) will be given. Finding the intersection will the imaginary axis is very important, along with finding centroid etc.)

10. Pl. try to memorize standard polar plots so that problem on Nyquist Plot could be solved( pl.note that the solution is really time-consuming)

11. A highly scoring area is : time-response analysis from 2 questions are expected)

12. Realization of PID control etc. should be covered from Ogata’s book, in addition to s-domain analysis

13. You can expect one numerical problem from Lead or Lag compensator design

For ECE students some additional topics need be studied seriously:

1. describing function analysis and phase plane analysis is most important
2. one problem on Lyapunov Stability is expected
3. problems on z-transform and inverse z-transform are really important
4. Highest importance needs be attached to problems on State Variable Analysis:
Solution of state equation, finding transfer matrix, finding state model from a given transfer function, test for controllability and observability should be at your focus
